PROFILE

Now in its 25th year, Westside Design provides a personal and friendly design-and-making service based on extensive experience.

Founded by Michael Mchugh in 1983, the company has built a solid and respected reputation designing and hand making a full range of bespoke fitted and freestanding furniture.

As well as working directly for private clients, Westside has also undertaken more extensive contracts for a wide range of public and commercial customers.
These include the Carmelite Priory, Kensington; The De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill; Serle Court, Lincoln's Inn; The Holburne Museum, Bath; The Costume Museum, Bath; and The Bath at Work Museum

Michael's background is in Fine Art. He obtained a degree in sculpture and design in Tasmania in the late 1960s, and after teaching in Australia for several years he moved to the UK where he co-founded Natural Woods in the mid 1970s.

Natural Woods flourished in this period, producing freestanding furniture using recycled pitch pine extracted from the grain warehouses being demolished at Avonmouth docks.

The partnership ended amicably in 1982 and Westside Design was established in larger premises on Lansdown Road, Bath, the following year.

Westside has a long history of collaboration with other craftsmen, designers and architects such as Feilden Clegg Bradley, Niall McLaughlin Architects, Northbank Design, Designscape, The Evans Partnership, Julian Brown of Studio Brown and Russell Frears of Design Connexions.

MATERIALS Westside uses a wide range of European and North American timber from local suppliers sourced from certified, sustained and managed forests.

Sheet material such as birch plywood or medium density fibreboard is from European manufacturers where possible.

A wide range of wood veneers is also available.

FINISHES As well as hand-applied oil and wax, high quality spray-painted lacquer and paint finishes in clear or solid colours are offered.
